Sachin Tendulkar. What does one say new of this man who has caused us to reach out and feel the electricity in the atmosphere every time he walks in to bat? What can one add to the reams penned by commentators who wax eloquent with delight at his incredible cricket?

The little big man lords over contemporaries, making capital of his unquestionable gifts — wonderful eye-hand coordination that mark superb shot selection and the ability to score off good balls, not to speak of his cricketing intelligence.

It is amazing how we seem to get impatient with our cricketers, more so with Sachin Tendulkar. On Sunday, I was part of a television show that devoted much time to discussing how his batting had gone on the decline. It was silly, even painful, to be discussing Tendulkar’s batting as being on downslide.

Barely 60 hours after the show was canned, Tendulkar was picking up a wonderful century against Pakistan in the fourth one-day international at Ahmedabad. It was his 38th hundred in limited-over internationals and proof that his reflexes or skills are hardly on the decline.

The first thought that springs to mind as one sits down to express oneself on the debate on the Indian cricket team’s Most Valuable Player is simple: Should there be a debate at all? Is it not a given that Indian cricket’s little big man Sachin Tendulkar wears that crown with comfort, style, modesty and deservingly?

In the first place, connoisseurs and coaches alike would frown at the concept of a most valuable player in cricket since it is a team game and all players (and reserves as well as support staff) must contribute if a side is to do well. In their books, all players are equally valuable, with no one player being rated higher than the others.
