Walawalkar closes in: Rajvirdhan wins in borrowed car

Mumbai’s Ameya Walawalkar and his Mars Racing team-mate R Deepak (Chennai) capitalised on a mistake by pole sitter S Narendran (TVS Girling) for a one-two finish in the Formula LGB Swift race in the third round of the JK Tyre FMSCI National Car Racing Championship at the Madras Motor Sports Track in Sriperumbudur near here today.

V Rajvirdhan (Prime Racing), 27, overcame a stressful run up to the Indian Touring Cars race – he busted no less than three engines and borrowed his father, B Vijayakumar’s car to claim his first victory of the season and edged two points ahead of TR Radha Selvaraj (Rad Racing) in the drivers’ standings.

A determined Ameya Walawalkar will resume his bid to rise to the top of the Formula LGB Swift drivers’ championship when the third round of the JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship 2011 gets underway at the MMSC track in Sriperumbudur near here on Saturday.

Walawalkar made up for two disastrous races in the inaugural round in June with spectacular victories last month but his Mars Racing team-mate, Chennai’s R Deepak will be keen to retain his championship lead with consistent performances in the two races this weekend.

Afiq Ikhwan completes four-race sweep in Sentul

JAKARTA: Malaysia’s 19-year-old Afiq Ikhwan (Meritus GP) overcame ‘massive understeer’ and a stiff challenge from Austrian sensation Lucas Auer (EuroInternational) in the final race of the weekend today to complete a sweep of four victories in the third round of the JK Racing Asia Series at the Sentul Intenational Circuit in Bogor near here.

Afiq Ikhwan’s stellar showing let him consolidate his second place in the championship with 144 points, 32 adrift of the consistent Auer’s 176 with eight races left. Nabil Jeffri (Petronas Mofaz Racing) was in third place with 95 points despite bowing out of the afternoon race in dramatic circumstances, going off track at the first corner on the 10th lap when Auer pushed him hard.

Afiq Ikhwan scores a double victory, bridges gap

JAKARTA: Malaysia’s 19-year-old Afiq Ikhwan (Meritus GP) completed a marvellous double by winning the two races in the third round of the JK Racing Asia Series at the Sentul International Circuit in Bogor near here on Saturday, rising to the second place in the championship behind Austrian teenager Lucas Auer (EuroInternational).

A visibly delighted Afiq Ikhwan picked up 42 points from his twin victories from pole to leave behind memories of two poor races in the second round of the series in Sepang in May. He now has 102 points and is a clear second in the standings behind Lucas Auer who has had podium finishes in all eight races so far in his rookie season to tally 146 points.

Afiq Ikhwan claims pole ahead of Lucas Auer

JAKARTA: A determined Afiq Ikhwan Yazid (Meritus Racing) put memories of a dismal finish his last start in the JK Racing Asia Series in Sepang (Malaysia) by claiming pole position ahead of Austrian teenage wonder Lucas Auer (EuroInternational) in the third round to be held this weekend at the Sentul International Circuit in Bogor near here. Ikhwan’s time of 1:30.918, beat the qualifying lap record held by Sean McDonagh who set the record back in 2008 by 1.1second.
