Drivers hoping busted engines is not a repeat theme

Leelakrishnan waits in the pitlane before he clocking a few laps on Friday

Drivers and teams alike will be hoping that busted engines are not a repeat theme in the Indian Touring Cars class when the fourth round of the 14th JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship is held this weekend at the Madras Motor Sports Trust Track in Sriperumbudur near here.

The Coimbatore-based Prime Racing team had a most eventful weekend the last time around, the fact that Rajvirdhan won a race came only as a consolation for the team busting close to 10 engines. Rajvirdhan shot ahead of TR Radha Selvarajan (Rad Racing) after that win but had to concede the lead after being unable to complete more than three laps in the last race.

Indian hockey: another new dawn?

Zafar Iqbal (left) and Ashok Kumar (Images courtesy: Amity and Stick2hockey.com)

It was a huge honour to be sharing the same space as hockey legends Ashok Kumar, member of the 1975 World Cup winning  team, and Zafar Iqbal, who was part of the squad that won the 1980 Olympic Games gold medal. All India Radio broadcast our conversation on September 14, 2011. Our chat focussed on the Indian team’s win in the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy tournament in Ordos, China, and on the road ahead that includes qualifying tournaments for the Champions Trophy and the Olympic Games.  I started by asking Ashok if this win is another new dawn for Indian hockey.

Since the chat was in Hindi, I shall try and post a English version soon. Click on the link below to hear the chat.

India swings towards golf

You would not even raise an eyebrow when you hear of some Indian kids wanting to emulate golfing ace Tiger Woods rather than a Sachin Tendulkar or a Leander Paes or a Viswanathan Anand or a Geet Sethi. Yet, as recently as two decades ago, if someone had predicted a golf boom in India, you would not have been blamed if you fell off your chair.

Consider this: Last year, Ashok Kumar won Rs 53 lakh in prize money from events on the Professional Golf Tour of India calendar. This year, Gaganjeet Bhullar (Kapurthala) has picked up cheques worth Rs 17.83 lakh from the PGTI Tour while the evergreen Mukesh Kumar (Mhow) has won Rs 14.38 lakh and Anirban Lahiri (Bangalore) Rs 14 lakh.

Bill needs to encompass broader canvas

The Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Ajay Maken and his team of officials appear to have read the pulse of the sports fraternity and the people at large right in proposing the tabling of the National Sports Development Bill in Parliament but faltered significantly in gauging the mood of law makers, falling at the first step by being unable to impress the Union Cabinet.

Once upon a time in Hyderabad…

I just have to hear the words “Once upon a time in Hyderabad” for my grandparents’ voices to come wafting in. My brothers and I grew up listening to the many moral tales that grandfather, a retired Post Master, had up his sleeve each evening but my grandmother recounted more stories about Hyderabad. I can recollect her voice quivered every time she recalled the advent of plague and how she had to move her brood to a camp in Punjagutta. And, for that matter, when she told us with pride about how grandfather braved the Razakkars during Police Action in 1948 and guarded a sackful of cash to be able to turn it over to Government of India Agent General KM Munshi.

TR Radha Selvarajan (Rad Racing) claimed his third victory in six starts this season in the Indian Touring Cars race, riding on some luck when leader V Rajvirdhan (Prime Racing) went out with a blown engine after three laps. Radha Selvarajan’s win came after three races and put him back in the lead in the drivers’ championship with 111 points.
