(Up)Set the pace

A few months after I first hit a celluloid ball as a pre-teen, I believed I was ready for tournament play and entered a day-long table tennis event at the YMCA in Hyderabad. I drew a bye in the first round and, for some reason, my second round opponent did not turn up and I was in the quarterfinals without even working up a sweat.

Then I came face to face with ground reality, losing in straight games. I could not go near the table for a long time, preferring the comfort of team sports like basketball and cricket. At least, there would be others to share the agony of a lost game. The blow would be softened.

A village story

I had to make haste to the village I had lived in from the time eight members of my family died in a tractor-trailer crash on their way to the mela in the nearest town. I had heard whispers in the neighbouring village that an urgent war council (read Panchayat) meeting had been summoned. I didn’t want to be late. Panchayat meetings usually offered some reason for mirth.

Yet, there was something in air that said it was unusual. In all my years – don’t ask me how many, for I have no idea – I hadn’t heard of a Panchayat meeting being called after the crimson sun had sunk beneath the horizon. As I made my way from the farmland and got closer to the village square, I also heard muffled drum-beats and a a pack of mongrels which was howling as they fought a territorial battle.

Indian Football at the Crossroads

We heard a lot of different voices during the group discussion on Indian Football at the Crossroads, organised by Hindustan Football Club at India Habitat Centre on December 18 but there was one striking bond that linked the voices together – a boundless passion for Indian football. Moderated by football analyst Novy Kapadia, the group discussion featured people from different streams – football administration, football coaching, a tournament organiser, the CEO of a sports academy and representatives of sports media. Here are my notes from the group discussion.

Bharatanatyam

Hello! And welcome! Namaste!

Priya & her friends, students of Parampara, turned out for their annual performance on Sunday, December 12, 2010. Along with four others, Priya was part of the vibrant Thillana act. Here are some photos from that act and there is one of the whole group of students who performed under the tutelage of gurus Elangovan and Marie Elangovan.

It  was lovely watching them perform with confidence and pride, aware that they were being scrutinised not only by their gurus but also by their own parents and the parents of their friends. It was a good evening with plenty of camaraderie and team work on view. With a bunch like this — and am sure there are many more around — I am sure that traditional Indian dance and music will thrive in the years to come.

Bengal’s persistence pays off

The uncomplaining Bengal duo of Ranadeb Bose and Ashok Dinda, who complemented one another when wearing dual mantle of stock bowlers and shock bowlers, allowed itself a satisfied smile after holding back Delhi’s bid to gain the first innings lead, in the Ranji Trophy Group A Super League game, at the Kotla, on Thursday.

Bose and Dinda claimed four wickets each and ensured three points for Bengal from the 14-run lead over Delhi. They were excellent examples of the team’s competitive approach and intensity on a placid track of low bounce and slow place that challenged bowlers to maintain a high level of discipline.
