G Rajaraman

CoffeewithRajIt is a blessing to be able to pursue my love for Indian sport and savour the opportunity to comment on it in a variety of platforms – print, TV, web and radio as a sports communication professional for more than 27 years now. It has been my privilege to know a number of champions in a number of sport.

I have been fortunate to witness some great moments unfurl and become part of our history – Leander Paes’ bronze medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, India’s conquest of the ICC World T20 crown in South Africa in 2007, the cricket team’s Test victory in Perth in 2008.

I have worked with daily newspapers (The Hindu, The Pioneer and Hindustan Times), a wire service (PTI), a weekly magazine (Outlook), websites (www.cricketnext.com and www.espnstar.com) as well as a news TV channel (Samay).  I am now Consulting Director with the official website of the 2010 Commonwealth Games organising committee.

I have authored a book Match-fixing: The Enemy Within (Har Anand Publications), edited the Afro-Asian Games Observer in Hyderabad in October-November 2003 and helped the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Communication Committee.

I have recently been conducting corporate training workshops, sharing knowledge gleaned over the years as a sports journalist. I have been based in New Delhi since 1992 and owe a great deal of my success to wife Sudha and daughter Priya, who have patiently not just put up with my passion for sport but also allowed me to sustain it.

Raj, all that I got to say is ‘awesome…forever’!! You sure set an example for all who think of pursuing their passions and make the best of it – for themselves as well as for everyone else. I wish I had got more time as your colleague, but i guess it was not to be….however, am thankful that even in the short time that we worked together, I have been able to find a friend in you…..shall always cherish that time and the ‘paav-paav’…:)
    Cheers!

Can we do a story on India basketball? I am an American basketball coaching trying to infect the hoops virus in the land of cricket. . .
